Lyrics

(Secret Poem #4)
Chokecherry blossoms and honeysuckle bloom
by the long mown lawn
Follow the path down the stairs into the shade
where the dogs have gone
There beneath the maples everyone is running
blonde girls, men in black
We’re walking slowly, deep in conversation
Seems we have the knack
of soaking up the hours
drinking in the days
topping up the reservoir
savouring the ways
we float in the presence
of this old and easy love:
the lush green waterways of love

Late in the day we set candles round the rails
watch the dusk come down,
rock in the porch swing, sitting arm to arm,
humming bits of songs
There beneath the maples each of us remembers
tunes our parents knew.
We follow gently, harmonize the chorus
Seems just one or two
will spin on for hours
close out the day
top up the reservoir
this satisfying way
We float in the presence
of this old and easy love
the sweet familiar melodies of love
the lush green waterways of love
