A bottomless source of aphorisms that at the time were exasperating and now crack me up.

Lyrics

Gospel According to Mama (2017)

Mama says, “Better say nothing, unless what you say can be kind.”
Mama says, “Cover your knees! You’ve enough leg to make a man blind.”
Mama says, “Stand when your elders and betters come into the room.”
And she says, “The world could be saved with enough elbow grease, a dustpan and broom.”

She says, “God has His eye on the sparrow.
The other eye’s fastened on you.
And Missy, whenever He’s busy,
my good eye is watching you, too.”

Mama says, “Use your God-given talents, but know the Source of them all.”
She says, “Pride is the sin of the angels and cometh before the fall.”
And Mama says, “Look in the mirror to know if you’re right with your soul.
If you can’t meet yourself eye to eye, how can you meet hope to meet your heavenly goal?”

“You know, God has His eye on the sparrow.
The other eye’s fastened on you.
And Missy, whenever He’s busy,
my good eye is watching you, too.”

“Always set a good example.
Say your prayers and keep your house clean.
God helps those who help themselves.”

Mama says, “God loves the sinner but that doesn’t mean that you should.”
“You’ll trip on your lip if you keep it stuck out.” And “I say so. Is that understood?”
She says, “The Lord loves the cheerful giver so always share whatever you can
with those who have less than you do. But don’t you share your pearls with a man.”

She says, “God has His eye on the sparrow.
The other eye’s fastened on you.
And Missy, whenever He’s busy,
my good eye is watching you, too.

Listen, Missy, if ever he’s busy,
remember, I’m watching you too!”
