Lyrics
North Prairie Night (2016)
Here in the still of my room
late on a north prairie night
I can hear Daddy and Mum
chatting with Greta and Red
I see the orange of the (gold setting) sun
outline the doorway in light
Everyone thinks I’m asleep
here in the deep twilit dim of a north prairie night.
Bedtime’s a rule of the house
Kids need their sleep as they grow
The folks stay up late with the sun
laughing and telling their tales
I can drift off to the hum
safe in the endless half-light
I know they’re solving the woes of the world
while I am curled in my bed on this north prairie night.
Watching the late summer sun
ride through a long prairie night (cousins to left and to right/elders have gone from our sight)
passing the photos around
black and white stories we share
Adding the colours we’ve found
the dark and the jagged, the bright
panning our memories for gold
now we are old in the hold of a north prairie night.
